Saint John the Baptist was a disciple of Jesus Christ and the son of the priest Zacharias and Elizabeth. Until the age of thirty, he lived an ascetic life in the Judean wilderness, devoted to prayer, study, and spiritual perfection. His clothes were made of camel hair, he had a leather belt around his waist and his food was dominated by locusts and honey. By divine command, he left the desert and settled in the Jordan River. There he met Christ, who asked him to baptize him. John's preaching bothered the Pharisees, as well as the four-headed ruler of Galilee and Perea, Herod Antipas, when he criticized him for his illicit cohabitation with his living brother Herodiada. That is why he even imprisoned him. On a birthday party, Herod asked Salome, his daughter, to dance with him, promising to give her whatever she asked. Herodiada, her mother, who envied John, then took the opportunity and urged her daughter to ask for John's head in a plate. Herod did not break his promise and so his beheading was followed. Two of the many celebrations of the Saint are his Gathering on January 7 and the Sharpening of his Holy Head on August 29.
