• Rhodonite is a pink manganese silicate of variable composition that often contains significant amounts of iron, magnesium, and calcium.Rhodonite is often associated with black manganese oxides which may occur as dendrites, fracture-fillings, or matrix within the specimen. Other names for rhodonite include: manganese spar, manganolite, and rhodarsenide.
• Chemical Composition: MnSiO3; Hardness: 5.5 - 6; Composition: Manganese silicate, sometimes with some calcium, iron, and magnesium; Color Red, pink, orange-red, and brownish-red. Massive specimens often have black veins running through them.
• Rhodonite is an attractive mineral that is often carved and used in jewelry. It is named after the Greek word for rose, rhodon. Its rose-pink color is distinctive and can only be confused with rhodochrosite and the rare mineral, pyroxmangite. Rhodochrosite however is streaked with white minerals such as calcite and is reactive to acids. While rhodonite does not react to acids and is usually associated with black manganese minerals and pyrite.
